NO 1 SONG of the TOP 100 SONGS of the YEAR 2007

I think by revealing what my favourite song of the year 2007 is, you guys should have a clear image of what this year has been like for me. In complete contrast to the years before (2004 : This Love (Maroon 5) , 2005 : Bad Day (Daniel Powter) , 2006 : Breathe In (Lucie Silvas)), the no 1 song this year truly carries a deep meaning. It will be the song that when I listen to will remind me of all the pain that happened within this year. It will remind me of all the sadness and depression. At the same time, this song will remind me that I've gone through it and I am stronger than ever. With its chorus that doesn't hold a single emotion back, this song has been the one song that allowed me to channel many of my emotions this year. In a top 10 that is filed with songs of all types, I am happy to conclude the year 2007 with this one last song. The no 1 song of the year 2007 is Damien Rice's Rootless Tree.

NO 2 of TOP 100 SONGS of 2007

NO 2
Natasha Bedingfield featuring Adam Levine
"Say It Again"

For the past two years, Natasha Bedingfield's Unwritten has been on my playlist on my Ipod. I just never seemed to get bored with it. I was very convinced that no matter what song she wrote, she will never ever able to top Unwritten. As it turned out, I was right. However, Say It Again is not a bad offering. In fact, it is a very good offering. As compared to Unwritten that had the lyrics that were written to make chickens believe that they could fly, Say It Again is just a simple song. It is a really simple nice song that you could just listen to over and over again. When I first heard her album, only a few songs jumped out at me but after some time, a few of those songs just fade into the background (Backyard, I Want To Have Your Babies and Soulmate) but a few other songs began to become favourites (Pirate Bones and this one). After a few months, I got to admit I am absolutely in love with this song. Of all the top 10 songs, this is probably the only song that reminds me of the happy-go-lucky days in Hiyoshi, Japan (the place where I am staying now). There are no exact memories linked to this one. This one is just purely because I like this song.

NO 3 of TOP 100 SONGS of 2007

Oh My God...It's 30th of December already. It's crazy right. Absolutely crazy. The day after tomorow will be 2008 already. Yay...an extra day in February. Hehehe. So continuing with my top 100 songs, we have now reached the top 3. Word of precaution : the top 3 songs are not chosen based on what song chart the highest or even what song received the most radio airplay. Rather, the top 3 songs are what songs I personally like and what songs that I heard over and over again throughout this one year. So coming in at no 3 is

NO 3
Dashboard Confessionals
"Stolen"

I am not sure if I included this song in my top 100 songs of last year or not as it was released rather late in 2006 but I know one thing for sure, this song definitely deserves a top spot in 2007. Now from a musical point of view, from the few songs I've heard from Dashboard Confessionals (vindicated, don't wait, these bones...), I've always thought that they hvae such a style with their music. It's rock but it's serenading and peaceful at the same time. It's the kind of rock music you can listen in your car. And the lyrics, oh my god, the lyrics is amazing. Don't Wait's lyric was amazing and this is mind blowing. So why is this song personal to me? I dedicate this song to Cait. Although it's over between you and I but it was great while it lasted. It was a lot of fun. And whenever I hear this song, I'll think of you. So here's to you. Stolen by Dashboard Confessionals.

NO 4 of TOP 100 SONGS of 2007

NO 4
One Republic
"Apologize"

This is the most appropriate time to apologize for posting this song as my NO 4 SONG of the year 2007. The first reason to apologize is because this song was released in 2006 but I only found out about it early this year during one of the episodes of So You Think You Can Dance, where it was used as the song for a contemporary routine for Anya and Danny. Fell in love with the dance first and after one or two weeks, it began to bug me as the song kept playing in my head. Then went online and looked it up and found the song. Since then, love the song and played it all the time. The second reason to apologize is because it only made the NO 4 spot and not TOP 3. I loved the begining of the song, the original one, not the one with Timbaland, and love the lyrics. And this song does carry a few great memories with me. First, this was the song I asked Cait to listen and also, this is also one of my younger brother's favourite songs. But the TOP 3 songs bypassed this song because they are more close to heart. So what are the top 3 songs? That is when I need to apologize again because you have to wait.

NO 5 and NO 6 of TOP 100 SONGS of 2007

NO 6
Marie Digby
"Umbrella"

2007 without Umbrella? Is it even possible? Can you think of another song that so many people sings just for the sake of singing it cause it is so damn catchy? Well, apart from Irreplacable by Beyonce Knowles (to the left X2), this is one of those tracks that once you hear it, it's stuck in your head for good. To give it credit, there is more substance here than Britney Spears' Gimme More. With a nice chorus, Rhianna has definitely made herself proud with this massive hit. However, the version that I like the best is still this song that only found its way onto YouTube at first, then sure enough it began to pick up pace and eventually found itself a huge fanbase. Instead of the Rhianna version, this is the version that is currently being played on Mix.Fm now. No massive production, but just a simple lyrics and musics experience. Ella, ella, e , e . Come on, you know you want to sing along with it. LOL.

NO 5
Michael Buble
"Everything"

Am I a huge fan of Michael Buble? Nope. Do I like any of his previous materials? A few. Do I like this song? Hell, yeah. Refusing to admit that I like this song cause I do not want to be perceived as another Michael Buble fan, I just let this song play on my YouTube but secretly, everytime this song pops up, I feel this joy in my heart. And my trip back to Kuching, I was filled so much joy that I finally gave it away. Soon this song found is way into my top 20 playlist. Coincidentally this is also the title of the chapter of Turning 2.0 Season 3 that premiered today on www.naza-nicksworld.blogspot.com.

NO 7 to NO 10 of TOP 100 SONGS of 2007

NO 10
Peter Kay, Matt Lucas and The Proclaimers
"I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)"

This is one of those songs that you swear you hate the moment you hear it but after a few listens, you're stuckewd to it. That was what happened to me. I downloaded it out of curiosity and now I actually like it. It's upbeat. It's funny. And it's enlightening. What is there not to like about the song.

NO 9
Rascal Flatts
"My Wish"

I call this the trip back to Malaysia song. I heard the track for the first time when I was driving in the car and put Mix.fm on. Even listening to this song again, puts me back to August 2007 when I was driving from my house to Tabuan Jaya. I still remember being at one of those junctions waiting for the red light to turn green while listening to this song. I absolutely love the lyrics. Call it country, call it whatever you want, I still love the lyrics. It's the kind of song you can sing to the person you love the most.

(what a bummer though that they didn't make an official video to this song)

NO 8
Lily Allen
"Alfie"

What made this song so dear to me now was that we sang this song during our graduation at the Japanese Language School last March. We were trying to look for a upbeat song to sing during our graduation. We have chosen Vitamin C's Graduation (Friend Forever) as our soapy song already so we were desperately in need of a song that could put a smile on people's face. I let one of my classmates hear this song and she immediately thought that the tune was cute and funny. After changing the lyrics to something that could sum up the personalities of each and every classmate, the five of us (that were in charge of performance) performed this track during our mini graduation party. People enjoyed it a lot. And I enjoyed it a lot too. Listening to this song again reminds me of all the times we rehearsed this song. Sigh...good all times.

NO 7
Kate Nash
"Foundations"

This song is extremely British. I mean British to a point that if you are anti British, you will die of a chronic pain. With her heavy accent, crazy British pronunciations, Kate Nash managed to release one of the biggest pop singles in the UK. I still remember listening to this song while we were in the intership program (which we named ESPRO : Education Summer Programme). Those were some good times. We laughed about a lot of things. Yes, we knew that we were there to learn but at the same time, since it was during our summer vacation, we tried our best to enjoy ourself as well. And that we did.

NO 11 TO NO 15 OF TOP 100 SONGS OF 2007

So as I mentioned before, the songs that I've personally chosen for my Top 100 Songs are songs that when I listen to again in 5 years time, will remind me of the great times, the sad times and the crazy times I had in 2007. The countdown continues with the next five songs from No 11 to No 15.

NO 15
Common Featuring Lily Allen
"Drivin' Me Wild"

I am not the biggest fan of hip hop but from time to time, you got to give hip hop artist as well as rap artist for their creative talent. The moment I heard the lyrics to this song, I was all over it. With a simple chorus (sang by Lily Allen), this could be one of the few hip hop / rap tracks that gets me going this year. Not forgetting the fact that listening to this track will remind me of Clyde, a lecturer at my university who is a huge fan of hip hop and who also taught me a lot about thinking from the opposite spectrum. Meeting him for only the past few months, truly helped to develop my mind. Too bad he's leaving Japan next year to further his education in the states.

NO 14
Thirsty Merc
"20 Good Reasons"

Listening to this song again right now as I am typing this reminds me of the many times I listen to this song while on the train. Looking at people who seemed so distant from one another, I began to long for the time I am back in Kuching again. I am not sure how many reasons I need to love someone, but I know now that even 1 reason is good enough. I can't wait to be back in Kuching again. Hehehe.

NO 13
Avril Lavigne
"When You're Gone"

I have no idea who can sum up 2007 without including this song in the list. This is THE song of 2007. The song that the radio played non stop from the moment it was released as a single until today. After the ridiculously catchy Girlfriend, I got to admit from the begining of the song, I am hooked. More importantly though, this is the song that I listened to over and over again whenever I call my cousin cause this is his ringtone. Gosh...just hearing this song brings me back to August and September this year. Ahh...good all times.

NO 12
Damien Rice
"9 Crimes"

This song bugged me for months. Even until now. I have no idea what does the lyric mean but all I know is I can sing along to it. I remember this song word by word already. It's spooky. It's creepy. It's frighteningly good. A typical Damien Rice song with a great video for a twist. This song reminds me of the time I spent in Asia Bunka Kaikan (my Japanese language school). I still remember listening to this song while walking from my language school to the train station to go and work as an English conversation partner. I think this could be the year that I actually became a semi fan of Damien Rice.

NO 11
Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore
"Way Back Into Love"

I am not exactly a huge fan of movies but I remember this year around February when I was dead bored cause there was nothing else to do and I decided to download a movie to watch. I downloaded Music and Lyrics and boy, it was funny. It was cutesy funny. And one of the songs from the movie was this simple ballad entitled "Way Back Into Love". Even after all this months, I still like this song. Nothing complicated about it. It has all the cliched lyrics and more.
